What If: New roles for decommed amphib assault ships?
A thought just occured to me.
Instead of decommissioning some of our oldest amphib assault ships and using them for Sinkex's or letting them sit in mothballs, etc., Why don't we try selling them and/or refurbishing them into civil operated humanitarian relief ships or hospital ships? With the amount of disasters that happen all over the world, I tend to think this might be a good idea.

The Australian Government could buy them and commission them into the Royal Australian Navy. Oh no...wait...they've already done that....
Happy to help with research & assistance regarding medals to Australians.

No need to pick on the Australians... It's more economical than building new ships... Anyway, If you're talking about the Newports, that would be effective. The ramp would be pretty annoying, but it's better than needing a fleet of Helos to move supplies around (Iwo class). Better yet, why not make some modern DUKWs? Amphibious trucks, well are just AWESOME!!!!! They wouldn't need to have much of a specialized transport, but anything with a crane or ramp. Also, why not make a small fleet (15 vessels) of some modern LSTs? except, as transports and hospital ships? More useful than the Helo transfer to a ship 15 miles off-shore.brad wrote:The Australian Government could buy them and commission them into the Royal Australian Navy.
