Calling all Ocean Liner and Cruise Ships fans!

Here we go.

Rush hour (day) on a Grand Cayman's tiny port. There are 7 (!!!) huge cruise ships in a port:
- 3 Carnival vessels (Inspiration, Imagination, Liberty, 70 ton each),
- 3 "Royal Caribbean" 142 ton ships.
- I don't know what was the 7th ship.

Has any body heard of 1/700 scale models of the modern Princess Cruises Grand class or Royal Caribbean Voyager class or Carnival Destiny class super liners.

These can be printed and rescaled. My own interest in these vessels ends with QE2 I'm afraid.

Yesterday was a nice day to take the D3000 out and point it at something which is not balsa and styrene. Luckily Passenger Terminal Amsterdam had something beautiful in, MV Funchal, as well as a floating apartment block. No further comments neccesary. I took a number of detail pictures of Funchal with my mobile the day before (from the terrace and stairs of the building in the right of the pictures) , if anyone wants to scratchbuild her PM me and I can send them to you. One of the nicer things of PTA is that it is possible to get really close with a camera.

Hey y'all. I thought that some of the people interested in this topic might be interested in hearing that I am scratch building a 1:230 model of the Empress of Canada (III) which was sold to Carnival Cruise lines around 1966 and ultimately set off Carnival's career. She sailed with Carnival Cruise Lines as the Mardi Gras until 1993.

I chose that scale because I wanted the model to be moderately large i.e. between 2 and 3 feet and so I decided on the scale of 1:230 because the length of the model came out to 33-7/8" which I thought was suitable. I like to make my models quite large and so I will probably make them in this scale from now on so I can display them together and know that they are proportional to each other.

P.S. Feel free to follow my progress in <pictures: works in progress>. Hopefully I can start construction in a few days.

To all fellow modelers who show interest to this post, your thoughts is greatly appreciated. I have to say I�m disappointed for what is offered in classic liners on the web. I Did build a 1/350 minicraft Titanic a few years ago and was somewhat impressed with the out of box detail. I am far from a professional but do appreciate a accurate representation of a ship, not a glorified bathtub toy with made-up running gear. I do have a couple of questions that maybe someone could answer.
How do manufactures decide future kit releases?
In your opinion, if a reputable manufacture released a series of classic liners in 1/350 or 1/700, do you think they would do well in today�s market?
Just for fun, which ones would you like to see?

Unfortunately, I am not sure that there is a market : look in this web portal how many topics are on warships, and how many on civilian ships ...
I would like to see more liners or cruise ships of course, and hope to see once NORMANDIE and OASIS OF THE SEAS ...

You've touched on a sore point. I, too feel liners are woefully underrepresented in the kit market. A quick search for model liners gives the impression of "All Titanic, All the Time". She was a wonderful ship, but she was only one of dozens! There are a very few other kits available, like Lusitania, Mauritania, France and QE2, but almost all are out of production. I, for one, would pay whatever the asking price for a good and accurate 1/350 Normandie, and household budgets be hanged... but that's just me. The average modeler's reaction to such a kit would be, "Norman who?"

Therein lies the problem. The cost of tooling a new kit is sooooo huge only the guaranteed mega-sellers are considered by the major manufacturers. That's why you have such a large selection of Bismarck kits, but not one for SS Kronprinzessin Cecilie.

I doubt there is too much of a market. There used to be the debrisfield board which was focused at merchant ships and mainly liners, but only few people ever came there, apart from the very dedicated liner collectors/builders. I too built the QM2 from Revell, but it was too boring for me, too many balconies, too much repetitive work. Honestly I think the market for real merchant ships, like container vessels, oil, ore and gas carriers etc. is even larger than a dedicated liner market. Simple reason for that would be that they are different and of very different size, I can imagine there are quite a few warship modellers who'd like a VLCC and a container ship etc. to compare with their warships. Once you have one liner, there is no real point in building a second one, the comparison was already made with the first one after all...
Me too, I won't build a second liner, not because I wasn't happy with the quality or size, but simply because I don't want to do all that repetitive work.

I've said it before, but anyway....
A 1/350 Queen Mary could sell. Both as a liner and as a troop ship. I would definitly buy her in her WWII "Grey Ghost" troopship configuration. I might even be tempted to buy her in her civilian clothes...
A Queen Elizabeth or a 1938 Mauretania might be interesting as well, but I don't find them as appealing. And I have no interest of the Normandie at all.
And since Airfix says that they will only make models of ship they can walk on, they better take a flight to California, visit QM and start their walking before she rusts away ....
