Calling all IJN landing transport ship fans.
This thread is for the IJN T1, T101, SS, and Shinshu Maru landing ships. First question: does anyone have a photo showing the anchor arrangements on the T101 LST style landing ships?

I checked thru all of my references. There's an anchor on the stern; have not seen anything on the bows.

Re: Calling all IJN landing transport ship fans.
Yes, there is an anchor stowed on what appears to be a frame on the stern. But on the Pitroad kit the anchor has no shank, there is no hawse hole on the stern on on the deck near the stern, so it's not clear how the chain goes from the capstan to the anchor.
There is a single bow anchor in an asymmetrical arrangement on the starboard side only. The captan and the anchor appears to be stowed on a sponson. The anchor chain runs from the back of sponson where the capstan is, to the front end. But there on the Pitroad kit there is no hawse hole, just an small ramp at the front end of the sponson. Does the anchor lie flat on deck for storage and is then pushed over the side using some unknown arrangement for use like on the Bismarck?
Also, on Japanese LST, are all the vehicles stowed on the upper deck, or is there a separate internal vehicle bay, undepicted on Pitroad, underneath the upper deck as well? The internal ramp that leads from upper deck to the front bow ramp seems awefully steep. If there is no internal vehicl bay underneath it, then the Japanese could have made the slope of the internal ramp much mroe gentle, which would have greatly lowered the ship's loaded center of gravity as well. The only reason I can think of why the internal ramp leading up to the upper deck is at such a precarious angle is to maximize the amount of space available in a lower vehicle bay behind the internal ramp.

Re: Calling all IJN landing transport ship fans.
Shinshu Maru is an interesting ship, and also historically important as the ancester of all dock type landing ship of today. I've been toying with scratch building her for some time now. But the hull of the ship, and its propeller and rudder arrangement appears to be quite unusual and optimized for shallow draft. Is there any books or references showing her in enough detail to scratch build her with enough interior detail to allow the landing craft dock and aircraft hanger doors to be shown open on the model?

Chuck,
Re Shinsyumaru - There is a diagram of the landing craft arrangement in Gakken #37 - pages 140/141 together with dimensions etc.
Unfortunately all the text is in Japanese.
I seem to remember a 'garage' producer called Mirage made it in resin in 1/700 scale. Long time ago now so probably impossible to get hold of.
Hope this helps

Chuck,
DOH!! Didn't see you had already included the Gakken drawing in your previous post.
However, did you see the IJN diorama in the Picture post forum. Ramartinez has a lovely model of Shinshu Maru on it - maybe worth a PM to him to see where he got the plans.

Re: Calling all IJN landing transport ship fans.
I have seen a few references from time to time of a Shinshu Maru with a semi-flight deck and the hanger razed. Was there any such conversion or comtemplation? Are there any drawings? Fukui only shows the version we commonly know, and makes no mention of any such conversion.
Able 1: the last picture you posted shows a Japanese ship under attack. It doesn't look like Shinshu, do you know what ship she is?
Cheers

Hello,
@able, thank you for the nice diagrams and pictures of Shinshu Maru, but especially thank you
for the nice picture of Kibitsu Maru (last picture, japanese ship under attack)!
By the way, do you have more pictures a japanese landing ships?
Greetings from Germany, Jan

Re: Calling all IJN landing transport ship fans.
Does anyone know what a typical loadout for a T-101 would be?
I would like to populate the top deck of my Pit Road kit with some accurate vehicles and i cant find any operational photos or any records of cargo ect.

I meant to answer this a while ago. There are two photos in the KMM volume on cruisers, in the section in the back on landing ships, that show a loadout. One shows 6 light tanks, 2 abreast in front of the bridge, two rows worth, then two in single file. The other shows some trucks, but too indisctinctive to count the number.

Thanks Dan!
Any idea when and where the photo was taken, any confirmed reports of the transports use in an operation would really help me figure out what they might have been carriying?

I can't cite any action reports but the phto with the tanks is dated 5/3/44 - combat transport #149 and the photo with the trucks is dated 3/45 with combat transport #146

Re: Calling all IJN landing transport ship fans. Mayasan Mar
I put this question out in another thread, but then noticed this one which seems to be more to the point of my quest.
Do any of you know of a 1/700 plastic merchant ship kit that would be close to the hull design of this Daihatsu carrier ? I am looking to do this with an interior and open stern doors.

Re: Calling all IJN landing transport ship fans.
Hello pagodaphile,
well, actually there is a kit of an Army Landing Craft Carrier, the IJA Tamatsu Maru (parts for Mayasan Maru also included).
But it is a resin kit, so the stern loading doors are closed.
See here: https://shop.modellmarine.de/product_in ... ts_id=1381
The master for our next kit, Kibitsu Maru / Hyuga Maru is almost done, but since we have troubles with our caster (we have
to look for a new one) the progress in this kit is delayed for a while, i am afraid.
Kumano Maru / Settsu Maru are also an interesting option to go for.

Re: Calling all IJN landing transport ship fans.
Hi! I'm looking for pictures/plans of the SS class landing ships!
Of special interest are the differences between the SS-2 (Banryu Maru) and the following SS-3 to SS-22 (Kairyu Maru) ships.
Google only finds this wiki picture of SS-19:
