Names of the G3 battlecruisers

Post by Sr. Gopher »

So, designed post-Admiral class, what would the names of the G3 class battlecruisers supposedly have been?

I've heard something about the class being referred to as the "Saints" class, but not much info yet...

Responded to you in the CASF thread for the G3s here.

I believe I read that the "Saint" names were being considered for the N3 battleships that were never built.

The G3's were I beleive going to be Invincible class, Invincible, Indomitable, Inflexible & Indefatigable.

One set of names put forward fro N3's was the Saint Class, named after the 4 Patron saints of the UK, St George, St Andrwe, St Patrick & St David. although as these ships never got to the building stage I don't think the names were actually put to the King, George V for approval, and whilst the Invincibles almost certainly would have got passed him, from what I have read of his arguments with first lords of the Admitalty over warship names, most particullarly Winston Churchill, whose suggestions of HMS Pitt and HMS Cromwell, amongst others were refused, I don't think "Saints" would have happened, and they would have ended up using more traditional names from scrapped WW1 ships. My money would have been one of them would have Been HMS King George V to replace the scrapped one.

If that were to happen, the names would have been shortened to Jellico and Beatty.

I seem to remember reading somewhere, the last two KGV's were going to be named "Jellico" & "Beatty", But I believe the King was non too happy & they were changed to "Anson" & "Howe". Traditionally the Royal Navy preffered to pick admirals from the 18th & early 19th centuaries when naming their major warships.

One could speculate that King George VI would have quite liked one of the class named after his old C in C (he served aboard HMS Collingwood at Jutland) , but had little time for the Brash self publicist side of Beatty's character & disliked the idea of giving him such an honour, and perhaps thought it unfair to have one without the other.

I've searched on Google, and surprisingly, typing "HMS Jellicoe" and "HMS Beatty" turned up results from various sites indicating that the Anson and Howe were previously renamed. Thanks Simon for the info.
