Ow! That's a nightmare for you alright! It pays to test spray on scrap plastic before you attack the model. An airbrush is a wise investment, saves a lot on paint, and you don't have to worry about those nasty brush strokes. They are quite easy to use, like anything worthwhile, it just takes practice. I use a Paasche "H" single action which is fine for ship models, great for painting all those small AA guns etc. The best thing is that they give you more control over the spray pattern which you can't get from a spray can. Plus they are ideal for weathering, not that the Arizona should be weathered too much, maybe slight fading at the waterline and a little rust, not much, just a little here and there. Try an airbrush once and you won't know how you did without one.

I've tried an airbrush twice. I had a Badger unit and sprayed an airplane model with it, but I did something wrong because the paint had a bunch of wet droplets of thinner in it that never dried, and it ruined the finish. The second time I tried again but ended up with orange peel. After that somehow the air valve got plugged and the airbrush was ruined. I think I just can't mix the right ratios of anything, which might also explain why I can't cook or even make the same-tasting cup of tea twice. Rattle cans are for Neanderthals like me, and yes they're crude but at least it got the job done.

Just tried to reply and deleted the whole thing!!! I love computers.
The first problem may have been that the thinner you used was not compatible with the paint, was it the same brand? The second problem may be too heavy a coat or spraying too close to the
model. Everyone has problems with an airbrush occasionally, believe me, I've found that out the hard way. But, if you're happy using spray cans and brush, then go for it! This is a hobby after
all, and is meant to be enjoyed. Looking at the photos of your model, you're doing fine the way you're doing it. If you're not enjoying building a model, what's the point?

Hi Stef
Glad you found the info useful. Dsk has some great pics of his model and show very well the fuel pipe. Look forward to seeing your test colour.

No. Port side only.

You'll notice that the housing that the fuel pipe feeds into on the aft section of the hull is only located on the port side, not the starboard. At least Trumpeter got that right.

The red line you've drawn should continue a little further back, to the little box that is mounted above the 7th porthole from the stern.

Okay, here's another question. How did the guys stationed in the bird's nest to man the .50's get up there? Shouldn't there be a hatch somewhere? The Trumpeter kit doesn't show any such detail so I'm wondering if I should add one.

Hi guys,
On page 248 of Stillwell's book, the photo of the twisted superstructure show two support posts that extend from the emergency cabin platform to the navigation bridge and then to the range
finder platform. My question is did these same supports exist between the flag bridge and the emergency cabin platform?

Hi JohnD. To answer your question, looking at my set of plans from The Floating Drydock is yes they do. :wave_1:

Hi Guys. New to the site and getting back into fray of modeling. :woo_hoo: I chose to back date my kit to the mid 30's. So that solves the question what color to paint it. I plan on starting in the next couple of weeks. Still doing my research and drawing up plans, so I'll probably picking your guy's brains for idea's. Glad to be aboard

If you pay attention to the plans you'll see they also exist under the little platform wings at the frame 88 "break" between decks (just outboard the vegetable locker).

For the benefit of those of us without the Floating Drydock plans, is there a picture or diagram out there that can show us?

Thanks Tracy, thanks Shannon. If I had looked a little closer on page 214 I would have had my answer without having to bother you guys. Still, I did not know about the supports near the vegetable locker. You live and learn, and I'm learning more about the Arizona every day, and that's not a bad thing.
Thanks to all, John
