Calling all RNN Admiralen-class (1928-1942) DD Fans

Post by Quincy »

I thought that this topic was on here, at least I thought it was? Oh well. These particular destroyers saw plenty of action and destruction throughout the war and are deserving of a thread all there own.

So, with that in mind lets get the ball rolling! :thumbs_up_1:

They're an interesting class of ship.

However, like so many of the NEI ships, they were unfortunately out-dated by 1942. Which is a pity, because they were all lost within months (weeks even?) of Japan declaring war on NEI.

Did these types of DD's have all metal decks,or wood/linoleum?

Bob, from what I've worked out so far, it appears that the decks were indeed metal.

However, it was soon recognised that metal decks were not ideal for tropical heat ( :doh_1: ), and it was quite common to employ the use of coconut matting on the decks, which apparently made things a bit more bearable :cool_1:

Yes! Searching is a bit difficult because they have so much! Note that everything by the NIMH (National Institute of Mililtary History) can be ordered. They also have drawings, see a list here http://www.nationaalarchief.nl/toegange ... ST.ead.pdf ( I can translate ;)).

BTW, you can also ask questions here: http://www.dutchfleet.net/. These people really know their navy, and historians and archive staff post answers.

Yea, I am registered on that site, and search through content often (I found the admiralen klasse thread). However, in-depth discussion is almost solely in Nerderlands, and my Nederlands is niet zo goed! :no_2:
