What wonderful photos!!!

These come courtesy of David Christy, the son of R. Jack Christy, Jr. AO3C USN, USS Absecon 1944-1946.

With one of these photos, I am having to reposition the cranes on my model. Luckily, this has been easier than I had feared.

That sure fooled me Carl, I was scrolling down and hadn't read your comments yet and thought that was a real picture, honest! Excellent photography work.

And those actual pictures you posted of the ship with the catapult are really cool too.

The really neat thing is the "sunlight" reflected off the "water" onto the hull. That and B&W mode, which would be appropriate for the era modeled, is what takes it from a photo of a diorama to a newly discovered ww2 photo.

From a photography standpoint, the "reflection" indicates excellent light source and camera placement. Play with depth of field and resolution to further enhance period characteristics, then sent a print to NH&HC claiming to have located an old negative and see if they slap a number on it.

Was it this model? Was it full hull? Then it was most likely Richard Sliwka's model. Madison is a long ways from his home around KC, though.

Here is a new photo of the USS Absecon. I hired some one to get this one from the National Archives, for me. I was hoping that it was going to be of the starboard side. But, this will due, for sure.

My retrieval sled looks too, small, doesn't it?

The plane on the fantail looks to be in pieces. It may have been one of the several capsized aircraft that was able to be retrieved and brought aboard.

I also noticed that there actually were portholes along the forward main deck. The micro film reels' General Arrrangement and Compartment Access drawings do not depict these portholes. I thought that it was odd there were only 5 portholes on the drawings, besides the bridge windows.

When I thought that my model was more accurate, it actually isn't. I'll have to add some portholes, I guess.

I didn't think it was small until this.
You have a better idea of the actual distance between the 01 deck support stantions. I'd work off of that known distance.

Its also a nice housekeeping photo. 'Standby to air bedding.'

I recieved an email from Richard Sliwka, today. He was, indeed, at the Madison, WI model show. He didn't mention if his USS Absecon won an award but, his USS O'Bannon won First Place in Ships and his USS Baltimore won Best of Show.

Kudos to Richard and well done!

Carl you had me fooled for a bit on the B&W pics.
The water reflection sucked me in, but the canvas tarps on the PT's from earlier posts made me say "hey wait a minute...."

A big "Thank you!" goes to Harold Abbott at Battlefleet Models for these resin copies of my custom AVP parts.



I visited Harry at his workshop, this past weekend, and watched the master at work. Any flaws in these parts is because of my craftmanship, alone. They are exact, crisp, and clean replicas of the masters that I supplied to him. Harry is making ten sets of parts, for me, and because he showed me how to do it and what materials and equipment to use, I'll be able to cast these parts in the future, for myself. I had a good Teacher.

I see three colors in the photo and the drawing that I see for Measure 32 - 5D only indicates two.

That's why I say that it is a new one, to me, as far as AVPs go.
