More on the 1/72 USS Skipjack. Looks like July release.
Reading through some articles on it, it's a plastic kit capable of conversion to R/C.

The Revell website is showing a 350 scale USS New York LPD 21 for a November 2012 release. They also show a 144 scale German UBoat Type II, but I presume this is the old ICM mold.

Does anyone know if the Trumpeter 1/350 HMS Eskimo (WW 2) will have a waterline option?

From the photo of the sprues posted some time earlier, the kit is NOT waterline. As a waterliner like you, I am disapointed that Trumpeter seems to have discontinued its previous practice of providing waterline options for it's 350 scale ships. As such, I have reconciled myself to developing a method of cutting down hulls.
My method is:
1) establishing a waterline and then masking it.
2) with an exacto knife or sawtooth blade, scribing the waterline the length of the hull.
3) With the fine sawtooth blade slowly cutting away at the scribed line.
4) Then gently sanding the bottom of the freeboard as smooth and straight as possible.
5) Then, using a flat plastic sheet (available at most hobby or craft stores) , place the plastic sheet underneath the hull. Scribe the outer edge of the hull, then glue the plastic sheet to the bottom of the hull. Then remove the overcut with scissors and sprue cutters.
I've done this with 3 350 scale ships so far, and it is not as sharp a cut as a waterlined designed model, but it still looks pretty good.

Is there any further news on the release of the Big 5 from Trumpeter? I'm itching to add a cage mast BB to my collection!Hanchang Kuo wrote:Some more interesting Trumpeter rumors...1/700 "BIG5" and a lot more straight from the horse's mouth.

Maybe not now, but I'm quite sure we will see one in the next 5-10 years.Atma wrote:There will be no large cage mast's.

.
Has anyone (presumably photo-etch) made a decent representation of a cage mast in 1/700th or 1/350th, that an ordinary mortal can use ?
Would cage masts be susceptible to 3D-printing ?

Were the two Trumpeter kits (Dreadnought and Colorado) the only "new" plastic kit releases actually shown at the Nationals?

Steve,
Trumpeter also had a test shot / build of their Tribal class destroyer that everyone seems to have ignored, Brandon did manage to catch part of the model in one of the first photos he posted. A buddy of mine did send me two photos of it, both mostly overhead views and to my eyes it looks like a Tribal, With no profile view to go by I cant tell if they got the shear correct. I sent the photos off to Martin Quinn so maybe they will show up in the Forum.

From the photo (admittedly small) , the Revell kit looks like a re-pop of the old Matchbox kit. I see no improvements to detail. I have a half-built Matchbox Tiger, and many of the finer details are very indistinct. Maybe if the molds got a good cleaning the next generation of kits from them would be an improvement over the most recent... but it looks to me that Revell took the easy way out.Bill Clarke wrote:Just found this, http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10197231

The Bandai kit is a welcome find - I've reposted over in the CASF for Amphibs and Transports with more information and links to photos of the actual ship.
Here's some more history on the ship and mission: http://www.jamstec.go.jp/e/about/equipm ... hikyu.html
Completed in July 2005, the deep sea drilling vessel CHIKYU, features the most advanced drilling capabilities in the world (7,000 m below the seafloor). With these capabilities, CHIKYU allows drilling of the previously unreachable mantle as well as the seismogenic zone. Acting as the principal vessel of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), the main objective of CHIKYU is to facilitate a wide range of activities that once achieved will contribute to the future of humankind. These activities may include revealing the mechanism to develop the giant earthquake, the origins of life, future global environmental changes, and new deep sea resources.
The kit supposedly features the ability to remove external features to expose the ship's moon pool for drilling. Seems like this is the kit to start from if you want to recreate a Glomar Explorer-type diorama.
