Calling all Colossus-class (WW2 & modernized) fans

Thought I'd get this one going. I am feeling mighty pleased with myself for buying L'Arsenal's 1/700 kit. What a beauty. I hear that there will be alternate parts available for modernised versions too.

Rob I cant remember what Jacques was saying to me at Telford was it that he has released 2 different kits one 1945 and then one as per the Korean war both have different bridges and airwings?


And then later on he will be releasing resin and photo-etch upgrade parts so all variations of this carrier class can be made from many different navies and periods?

I see he has also brough a new French destroyer out in 1/700 so if Arromanches is modeled at least she has an escort!

My preference is immediately for a late-war RN version, possibly another one to come after that. The other idea that springs to mind is a late 60's version of HMS Triumph.

Hi there, I am hoping that someone out there will be able to help me determine the colours used on the disruptive scheme worn by Hms Vengeance. It appears to be Grey , Darkgrey and possibly light blue but if so what were the proper shades. Thanks for any help you can give.

This is actually from a post on the Airfix Tribute Forum, one of the members has asked the identity of the carrier in the pic below in regards to his grandfather's war service;



It's obviously an RN Colussus class CVL, the pic is from approx '46 - '48, taken in the Dardenelles (no date), the ship still has a WWII tripod mast and lots of life rafts, so the possibility is Colossus, Glory, Venerable or Vengeance. I have a pic of Vengeance before she was rented (borrowed?) by the RAN and it could be her but I think that's a longshot. The aircraft on deck are down aft a Sea Fury and a pair of Fireflies up toward the island. I have exhausted my reference material on this class of CVL and still can't nail it down.

It'd be nice to answer the member's question.

Secondly, does anyone have GA drawings for the class? I'd like to do a scratchbuild of one of the class members (Vengeance? maybe?) 1/600 scale as it would be something very different in my model ship collection.

Any help muchly appreciated

It would have to be late in that date range - or later still - to be Sea Furies as normal equipment. I understand Vengeance left the Med in 1948 to convert 7o the Sea Fury. It could be Glory in 1950. Theseus had Sea Furies but not in the Med (OK, limited data) and Triumph didn't.

Modernized Colossus Class carrier HMS Venerable, sold to the postwar Royal Netherlands Navy.
I am currently building this carrier in scale 1/400.
Starting point is the Heller Arromanches, added all the resin and etch parts to turn it into the modern angled deck carrier.
The carrier was modified at the Wilton Feijenoord Shipyard Schiedam, from 1955 until 1958.

Constructs and Miniatures, one of the vendors on Shapeways:

One can presumably add 3d-printed 1/700 aircraft on her, or even 1/700 aircraft from the many styrene sets out there.

Examples of aircraft on Colossus class CVLs in foreign service range from 1/700 Skyhawks for the Brazilian aircraft carrier Minas Gerais and the Argentine aircraft carrier Veinticinco de Mayo or Trumpeter 1/700 Harriers for the Indian aircraft carrier Vikrant.

Also, I'm wondering why there is a separate thread for HMAS Melbourne even though she was technically Majestic class, which had only slight differences in tonnage and draught from the original Colossus class CVLs.

I hope you realize how horrible the detail is in that �white natural versatile plastic� has a rough finish and is not really for display models. COB makes one piece ships for gaming not display.

Correction: our kit was announced THIS year, in early January. Only weeks ago. It's due for summer now. All this info is on our FB page, so it's not like it's dragging. I'm taking the time to get the packaging, the decals and the instructions done and done right.

And this 3D printed version is not only going to be very rough, it's not accurate. I can tell just by looking at it.

Not that I really care, since plastic beats resin and 3D printing any day, and our price will be much lower than this.

By the way, Majestic-class ships do differ externally from the Colossus class in having an extra pentagon-shaped port near the bow, in front of the one already there, on both sides. So we would have to make different hull side tool sliders to make the Majestics in the future. This is not planned at the moment.

Thank you Mike for the update on your project. I am looking forward to the release of the IHP 1/700 Colossus kits.

While many will be disappointed at having to wait longer for a Majestic class version, perhaps you can collaborate with ModelMonkey for an add-on part to simulate and perhaps offer that "pentagon-shaped port near the bow" in the future? To supplement your kits.

FWIW:

Mike/IHP brought the sprues of the new Colossus kit to MosquitoCon earlier this month. I was certainly impressed. It's every bit as sharply molded as one would hope.
