To all my fellow builders, I have been on somewhat of a hiatus from building due to my work sch. I've not been into the shop in a few months, but I'm off work today and heading to the slipway today. Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm alive and getting back out there.

Hi Jim,

I know the feeling! I am done traveling for a few weeks for work. I am trying to get back to the 350th Kearsarge. The Airwing is done but now I have to attack the PE along the hull and sponsons before I do the deck and upperworks. I need some 3d figures for the hanger as well.

I did get plans for a 1/350 Midway so I may tackle that next. I am thinking about doing a balsa keel and frame planked by styrene. I figure that once the hull is done, it is downhill from there. I am thinking CVW-5 1972-ish. Phantoms, Intruders, Corsairs, and Sky Warriors! What more could you want!! :thumbs_up_1:

Keep up the good work!

Nice build Red!

I will probably do a full Hull of Midway.

I found out something very interesting about the Forrestal Class and the Kitty Hawk class. The are essentially the same Hull. Given that, take the 1/350 Enterprise and chop out 1.72 inches( 1 and 23/32nds of an inch) from midships, glue it back together and you have the correct Hull for either a Forrestal or Kittyhawk. Then just scratch build the sponsons, hanger and flight deck, and the island. To me, shaping a hull was going to be the hard part. Once you cut away the hanger door openings and the other sponsons above the hanger deck you can re-work the ship sides and sponsons to be correct.

So given all of that, I am planning a 1967 ish CVW-14 Conny and a 1961 CVW-9 Ranger. The bonus is that you can get the less than desirable Mini-Hobby Enterprise for around $40 or so if you watch ebay.

Good afternoon everyone, well I made it to the shop this afternoon for a GREAT build session. I worked on SARATOGA and got her 98 %, all that is left is decals to the island structure. Then moving her out of the slipway. I'm probably going to pull TURMAN and LINCOLN out of drydock and get them finished, with the exception of the hull numbers as I need to order them. I've also worked on WASHINGTON some more and need to finish the island and attach it. I have also begun building another NIMITZ class not sure yet which one it will be yet as I've only done the basic's as far as assembly work goes, but made great progress on it including building the hangar bay in the forward area for ELE 1 and ELE 2. Mostly right now its OOB build, more details to follow on that one. I will post pics of SARA as soon as I complete her hopefully this weekend.

I will also post pics of the NIMITZ, and REGAN since they are completed now except the airwings. I hope everyone remembers that these builds are all rebuilds from when I moved and they got damaged. They actually look better this time then they did first built. I guess its more patiences this time.
I hope everyone is well and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all.

I just got the Mini-Hobby Enterprise (without beehive) for Christmas from my wife!

On initial inspection it looks good to me. I was going to start on it asap, but I recently learned that I will probably be moving to Tacoma, WA this summer so I will wait until after the move and I get set up again. Plus, this give me time to collect more aircraft and some PE.

Happy Modelling,

I was looking at my 1/350 Mini Hobby Enterprise the other day and I think that it can build into a nice model. The "Beehive" Island is not quite correct. It has less crisp lines than the Tamiya kit. I believe that it is the same mold. Mini Hobby got them from Tamiya. I wanted to build an old Enterprise to go with the Tamiya 1982 era kit and do a 1/350th scale Phantoms, Skyhawks,Vigilantes, SkyWarriors, and Intruders airwing. I think that I would prefer to do the Conny instead though.

One bonus of doing CVW-14 is that the GMM 1/350 High Viz Decals can be used for both Enterpise and Conny. That helps takes care of VF-142, VF-143, and VA-196. I have enough for 12 Phantoms each and the 12 Intruders. I need one more set to get all of the phantoms and GMM is out of them. VF-142 cruised 13 jets and VF-143 cruised 14 Jets.

Hey Mark, I think I have a set of the hi-viz decals from GMM in my stash, if I can find them and assuming they are still useable, they're yours.

Yeah? CVW-14 was the Airwing on Ranger 1965/66 when my uncle was lost & my 1/350 Ranger will be displayed with! Vf-142, VF-143, VA-55, VA-145 & 146 and of course, RVAH-9 which my uncle flew with.
I'd be interested in seeing some pics of those decals you speak of...

Sorry Mark, no joy. I guess I was GMM CVW-17 sets, which I have a couple of. Looks like I either used up my high-viz sets or traded them away long ago.

Sorry, I'll keep my lookouts posted though.

Good evening everyone,
Well I didn't make it to the shop this weekend like I had pland but I will be there tomarrow, actually I have to clean up in there since everything has been put in there for storage since Christmas. Sooooooo, I will clean up and start building some more. I have more rebuild work to do and just a tiny bit to get done on a couple of others.
Then I will get new pics to post.
Now, I have a question for anyone, need help finding the 5" turrets for a Forrestal build 1/700 scale, does anyone know where to find them? I'm planing a commissioning build of Forrestal. Yes, I know this will stretch my scratch building abilities. But I'm ready for the challenge. I've been researching pics and getting good ideas on how to do this. So if anyone knows where to find them, please let me know.

Hi Jim,

http://www.hlj.com/product/PITE-01

You are looking for the Skywave Modern Weapons Set V . Each set has 2 5" 54 Mounts per box. You will get lots of extra goodies along with the 5" mounts. They are hard to find so I would jump on these as fast as possible! They are around $10 per set plus the shipping.

If I were doing a 1/700 Forrestal, I would start with the Fujimi Kitty Hawk for my hull. The Forrestal's and Kitty Hawks have basically the same hull. The Fujimi Kit is nice in that it is clean of sponsons from the start. Then you scratch build from the hanger up. Get a set of plans from Floating Drydock to help out. You can take them to a Blueprint Shop to have then shrunk to 1/700 scale for reference.

Good Luck!
