Calling all ships' builders' models fans.

By that I mean fans of those models built by shipbuilding firms to show how their new ships will look. Often built by apprentices; these are magnificent examples of the model builder's craft and I thought it might be handy to have a sort of one-stop repository of the locations of these fine models.

I will start this off with two locations I know.

First location: The Dock Museum, Barrow-in-Furness, U.K.
The ships: HMS Erin, The Canopus class ship HMS Vengeance (1902) and HIJMS Kongo (1913).

The second location will be harder to access as it is Furness General Hospital, also in Barrow.
The ships: the Town class cruiser HMS Newcastle (1937) and the Russian armoured cruiser Rurik (1906)

good thread, indeed!

But I'm not sure if those models were built by apprentices, I believe those joiners working in the shipyard's modelshops were highly skilled people instead.

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich has a large selection of builders models. Many are posted on their website:

Good thread This is one of my personal hobby horses . There are so many outstanding ship builders models throughout the world that calls out for a book dedicated to this subject alone. I did touch on this in �Warships and Warship Modelling� but the subject is to wide and deep to do it justice in a modelling publication .

Just thought I should let people know; the local council, who own and run the Barrow Dock Museum, have announced their intention to shut the museum over winter as part of its cost cutting plans. The closure will be from November to Easter 2012. A lot of people here are annoyed (to put it politely) and can't understand the council's thinking on this and other cost cutting ideas announced.

Update...

Our local paper is carrying the story that the museum may be staying open but only for five hours a day on five days of the week.

The Transport Museum in Glasgow has many and those that are not on show are in their Resource Centre which can be visited.

the museum at the Washington dc naval yard, which is free!, has a huge collection of ships builders models if I'm not mistaken including some from Gibbs and Cox. last there in 2015, it is a amazing collection of primarily naval warship models. Couldn't recommend it more.
