Based upon previous correspondence you have supplied, Tracy, I do recall that the decks should be left natural wood. However, this memo also asks about bright work. Should we assume that the bright work was painted over? TIA

Correct - the original SHIPS-2 had this line:

All bright or shiny objects, no matter how insignificant, shall be painted, covered, or removed.

Well, I've been meaning to ask survivor Lonnie Cook if it was the steel decks he meant that he says he painted in the newer shade. This could shed some light on the decks.

He told me of being part of the painting in the newer, lighter shade, and that he and his buddies couldn't go on liberty until they'd finished their assigned area. So, he said they just poured the paint right out of the bucket and spread it with mops in a hurry so they could go. The next day, apparently the area was hosed off, and since the paint had dried unevenly due to the mop-slopping, many globs of not-quite-dried paint washed away leaving the original darker color exposed in several areas...resulting in a chewing out of epic proportions!

He really gives a good laugh at that story, although I'm sure he wasn't laughing at the time....but if true it likely supports the 5S on the steel decks theory.

Perhaps her steel decks were painted like Portlands in these Dec '41 photos.

Does anybody have any knowledge about the positioning of the ammunition lockers on the boat deck?
There are large square ones and smaller rectangular ones.

I'd like to know what was stored in each and why they were positioned where they were. At least two of the large square ones (both port and starboard, thus four in total) seem way out of place and not very near their respective mounts. The number of rectangular boxes doesn't match the number of gun mounts, either.

I'm assuming Trumpeter has them in the correct spots on their 1/200 model--maybe that's assuming a lot.

Ok all here's one...the Trumpeter 1/200 Arizona has the aft tubs for the future 1.1" AA on round pedestals. Should they be square like on this pre-war picture(Life Magazine) of the Maryland?

It appears to be square on this cropped 1/41 refit picture..Ignore the fairlead that's in the way, the left edge of the pedestal extends further than the gusset support. Does anyone have any better photo?

It seems I might have answered my own question. This crop from the USS Oklahoma General Arrangement plan shows a box. These aren't the best plan source, but it does suggest this was a standardized mount for 3"/50 - 1.1" AA in BB's..

Doesn't Arizona's plans show something different? I'm pretty sure it does.

They are round on Arizona's plans, but I don't know if that's the support underneath the platform or the mount interface for the 1.1" guns.

That's what I thought. The AZ plans just shows the base mount for the 1.1"s. Couple this with the MD picture and the picture of the Arizona 1/41 refit.

Here's a better enlarged photo of the refit ...There is a fairlead in the way but you can make out the two supports on the flat sides of the base and the ones running from the corners..

So, what was the actual colour scheme of the Arizona on Dec 7? I seem to have missed that somewhere, although I was aware that it was somewhat in dispute.

Pre-internet MS-1 Very dark gray, nearly black gray.
Post-internet MS-1 Sea blue or navy blue opinions... no color photos have surfaced as of yet.
It's all opinions! Take your pick.

Pick the opinion supported by facts, directives/orders, naval personnel accounts, not just some B&W photos and wrong assumptions. The internet has opened up much more information and has made it accessible..
