China building second aircraft carrier - reports
By: Agence France-Presse
February 2, 2015 12:58 PM

BEIJING -- A firm has won a contract to supply cabling for a second Chinese aircraft carrier, comments by local authorities suggested in the latest sign that Beijing is boosting its maritime power, although news of the development was swiftly deleted online.

Authorities in Changzhou said on a verified social media account that "in 2015, our city will focus on promoting some major programs," including Jiangsu Shangshang Cable Group "winning the contract for China's second aircraft carrier".

The Changzhou Evening News carried a similar report at the weekend, although both the newspaper article and the post on Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like microblogging service, were deleted shortly after publication.Neither report gave details of the ship.

In a subsequent leak, Wang Min -- the Communist Party secretary of Liaoning province, where China's first aircraft carrier is based -- said the country was already working on a second ship to be completed around 2020.

CNN
China says it's building new homegrown aircraft carrier

By Jethro Mullen and Shen Lu, CNN

Updated 11:04 AM ET, Thu December 31, 2015

Beijing (CNN)China says it's building a new homegrown aircraft carrier as it seeks to expand its military clout.

Beijing already has one aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, which it bought from Ukraine in 1998, spent years refurbishing and put into service in 2012.

The new carrier was "independently designed in China" and is being constructed in the northeastern port of Dalian, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said Thursday.

The U.S. military and independent analysts have long believed that China has been working on its own aircraft carrier project while using the Liaoning for training purposes.

Also, a video has surfaced showing operations aboard Chinas only aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, complete with the head of the Chinese Navys making a visit and J-15 fighters landing and launching.

More importantly, this video at the link below shows how much Chinese aircraft carrier operations have evolved.

Chinas Aircraft Carrier Ambitions

As the country builds its first indigenous carrier, what might it have in mind?

By Koh Swee Lean Collin
January 18, 2016

The international media landed itself a gift shortly before ushering in 2016, when it transpired at a recent Chinese Defense Ministry press conference that Beijings first indigenous aircraft carrier, and the second one for the Peoples Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) after the Liaoning entered service since September 25, 2012, is currently under construction.

A Surprise?

The announcement is hardly a surprise, given that open-source intelligence, academic and media commentaries have long reported on Chinas ongoing aircraft carrier program. Even Chinese reports (see here and here) have hinted at PLANs aspirations to operate more than one carrier. The carrier was even dubbed Project 001A, and Internet photos of what appears to be the assembly of modules for an aircraft carrier-like platform at a Dalian shipyard have circulated. Chinese officials, including those from the PLA, have also noted the existence of the program.

Business Insider
Satellite imagery reveals China's progress on their second aircraft carrier

STRATFOR

Jun. 3, 2016, 1:53 PM 9,942 5

Satellite imagery reveals the progress China has made on its new Type 001A aircraft carrier project. Construction on the carrier began at the Dalian New Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co.'s shipyard in northeastern Liaoning province in early 2015 and has since proceeded at a brisk pace.

The imagery, acquired from Stratfor's partners at AllSource Analysis, suggests that the project is a modular construction, in which sections of the vessel are built separately and then fitted together, allowing for shorter build times and greater flexibility. At this rate, the Type 001A could be launched as soon as early 2017, though commissioning it into the fleet would take several years more.

So, just to be clear, the same country with the magic scary wonder missile that makes US carriers obsolete is building...carriers.

Rather provides their opinion on their own armament, does it not?

1. A warship's value and purpose is not defined by how easily it can be sunk, but by what it can do prior to being sunk.
2. China's not sinking its own carrier.
3. The US and its allies does not have a comparable "wonder missile".

Of course. Then why, in most discussions and inflammatory articles, is the US carrier referred to as 'Obsolete', or in "Incredible Risk"? After all, its value is not defined by how easily it can be sunk (hardest think to hit and sink afloat today), but by what it can do prior to being sunk (dominate ocean and landmass across many hundreds of square miles).

http://www.businessinsider.com/chinas-g ... te-2015-10

It is the hipocrisy I am attempting to illustrate here.
Timmy C wrote:2. China's not sinking its own carrier.
Not really tracking here. They are building Carriers because the Carriers have Military and Political capability, yet the articles on the DF-21 spooky magic missile say that the USN carriers have had those traits arbitrarily wiped clean. A dichotomy to have made a primary weapon system obsolete, and then to build more of them...
Timmy C wrote:3. The US and its allies does not have a comparable "wonder missile".
I'd check the awareness here: http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/systems/ctm.htm

That we chose not to pursue this may or may not be a good thing - after all, when you launch any ballistic missile, one assumes a nuclear warhead, almost instantly bringing the possibility of a nuclear response. This includes launches of MRBMs, like the DF-21.

Conventional Trident has a much broader range, and we could deploy it worldwide, so not just the DF-21 China Sea area. The reliability and accuracy of the Trident weapons system makes the DF-21 look like it was drawn on a dirty napkin with purple crayon.

Chinese carriers make great targets for the USN. With such a distinct Submarine superiority, we really don't need a DF-21 type weapon. With such a distinct Naval Aviation advantage, we really don't need a DF-21 type weapon. With improving anti-ship capability on surface craft (which we ignored for almost 30 years..), we really don't need a DF-21 type weapon.

But we could have one in Conventional Trident in relatively short order if we wanted one.

Again, pointing out the hipocrisy in the Chinese attempt at area denial being somehow instantly superior to anything the USN does.

Basically, all the articles on the DF-21 making Carrier operations obsolete or untenable are and always have been bunk, and the owner of the 'super weapon' that 'makes them obsolete' building the very thing the articles say has been made obsolete, backs up the excrement that those opinions are based on.

A new or different weapons system comes along and you develop countermeasures and/or tactics to deal with it. No different than any other new weapon system or tactics.

And Aegis is very good at local ABM.

Major update:

China's first indigenous aircraft carrier nearing completion

IHS Jane's 360 - 17 August 2016
The imagery shows that, with the addition of the bow section and other exterior components, the assembly of the Type 001A CV is nearly complete. Two of the component fabrication areas adjacent to the dry dock are largely clear of materials, indicating that work on the Type 001A hull is nearing an end. Few uninstalled components remain present, including the forward aircraft elevator.

<snipped>

Across the harbour from the Type 001A's dry dock, work on Dalian's three Type 052D DDG hulls is progressing. One hull remains in dry dock, with two pier side. The first hull is visibly complete and is undergoing sea trials, while the second hull, launched on 3 August 2016, awaits the installation of various components.

Berthed at the northern end of the ship yard, the second hull lacks many sensor and weapon fittings. Notably absent are the forward 130 mm gun, the forward vertical launch system, and various sensor fittings, including the Type 366 radar mounted atop the bridge.

Yep, looks like an optical illusion. The red arch bridge/gangplank ends on the starboard edge of the flight deck, so follow that aft and you can see the island is still on the pier.

Here Comes China's First Home-Built Aircraft Carrier

By Kyle Mizokami
Feb 1, 2017

A report in Defense News states China is making steady progress on its second aircraft carrier, the Shandong. Under construction near Shanghai, Shandong is set to be China's first domestically produced aircraft carrier and the first to be combat-ready.

Previously known as Type 001A, the carrier's official name was recently announced on Shandong province television and radio. Shandong is currently under construction at the Dalian shipyards, where the nation's first aircraft carrier, Lioaning, was converted from a rusting, unfinished ex-Soviet Navy hulk to active duty Chinese Navy ship.

In a rundown on Shandong's construction progress, Defense News says "the new carrier is broadly similar to the Liaoning and retains the ski jump for launching aircraft, but contains a revised flight deck arrangement." The article states the superstructurethe island overseeing the flight deck from where flight operations are controlledhas been mated to the hull and the ship should be launched later this year. "Launching" in warship construction is the floating of a partially constructed hull in water. The ship will still require several more years of fitting out before it can be commissioned into military service and considered ready for combat.

China is about to launch its second aircraft carrier, 001A
March 6, 20173:09pm

CHINAs first homegrown aircraft carrier is nearing completion. The scaffolding has come off, fresh paint is being applied and new details are emerging of its design.

The ship dubbed Project 001A, or CV17, is likely to be launched within weeks.

Adding to the atmosphere of expectation is a Beijing state-media video infographic outlining the modular design and advanced construction of the as yet unnamed aircraft carrier being built in the Chinese port city of Dalian.

It reveals that, despite the similarities in appearance, this new ship is a significant improvement over the Soviet design it was reverse-engineered from.

Chinas defence ministry has confirmed that the countrys first locally built aircraft carrier has entered its final stage of construction before the hull is launched, which media reports suggest could be as early as April 23, the founding anniversary of the navy.

Chinas first home-built aircraft carrier is now being fitted out, everything is going very smoothly, defence ministry spokesman Wu Qian said on Thursday when asked about the carriers upcoming launch.

Regarding the news [about wether the ship will be launched in time for the navys anniversary] I believe you wont have to wait too long.
