Re: Calling all USS Buckley / RN Captain class (DE) fans
As far as I can recall, all BUCKLEY class DEs completed without the fantail 20-mm guns installed prior to about late 1943 or early 1944. "Most" BUCKLEY's had a quad 1.1-in mount instead of a twin 40-mm mount (only DE-53 and DE-153 were delivered with a twin 40-mm mount). Likely she had the extra 20-mm guns added prior to going to the Pacific.
USS HARMON (DE-678) was commissioned (31 August 1943) in Ms 22, but was repainted in Ms 21 when she went to the Pacific (November 1943).

Cheers Rick; that's huge.
One small quibble: according to Navsource, Harmon was commissioned on the August date you give but in 1943 rather than 1944.

Duh ... My bad, too big a rush (dinner was calling). Both dates should be 1943. I'll go and correct them.

Reviving this dormant CASF thread
I'm actually building ex-Bowers APD-40, which was a Buckley-class before her conversion in 1945.
Accordingly, some of the Buckleys eventually had Mk.52 fire control and had the Mk.26 radar directors replacing the Direction Rangefinder starting in the summer of 1944.
Was there any 1/350 part made for this Mk.26/Mk.52 radar director -- either aftermarket or as a standard part of a plastic kit?

USS England PE
Just opened the 5 Star USS England PE set. Bought this to eliminate the marginal moulded arbors on the aft bulkheads. The set was very reasonable for the amount of PE. I'll post pics as things progress.

help with USS Gantner plans please!
Hi,
would anyone be able to help me with plans or drawings for the USS Gantner (APD-42) please? Richard Sliwka made a great model as seen on this site based on the ISW USS Lloyd APD kit. Plans of that ship (even the model drawings) or any similar in the APD class would be of great help, thanks.
I'm really struggling to find anything on the internet!
Many thanks for any help.

Squadron signal destroyer escorts in action has some info but very few measurements. But is has a birds view perspective for the buckley class before and after change to APD...
Maybe in this book too: http://destroyerhistory.org/de/buckleyclass/

I'm little stumped here trying to figure out the original Buckley ( and Reuben James ) bridge layout. They lasted only few months but hopefully there are some good close ups in existence or plan views that would allow for it's reconstruction. Photos I have been taken from too far off or at the "wrong' angle...

Darius,
You want views of BUCKLEY (DE-51) as completed? I have a couple of images dated 24 April 1943. I can't post them right now (I'm on the road), but I maybe able to E-Mail them to you. I don't have your E-Mail address with me, so I will send an E-Mail PM via Modelwarships forum. Reply to me and I'll see if I can send from the motel.

Re: Calling all USS Buckley/Captain class (DE/APD) fans
Yes there is - if you insist on building in resin that is! Iron Shipwright has a 1/350 model kit for USS Rudderow. The only change you will have to make is replacing the main armament of the two turrets by 3 inch guns without turrets.jerryd wrote:Is there a USS Loeser DE-680 Resin Model. ??
But if you are looking for any model kit then the most obvious choice is to get the Trumpeter 1:350 kit of USS England DE635, which is a Buckley class just like USS Looser (sorry, Loeser...). And if you fancy a larger model then you could try to find the older Monogram or Revell kits of USS Buckley, scale 1/249. In 1/700 you have the kits from Niko and Pit-road, the former in resin and the latter in polystyrene, both of Buckley.

Jerry,
For what timeframe do you wish to build a model of USS LOESER (DE-680)?

Re: Calling all USS Buckley/Captain class (DE/APD) fans
Hey all, I purchased the USS England kit and the PE set to go with it. I want to convert it to the up-gunned 5"38/cal refit, but finding enough reference material is difficult.
I bought TFD's Buckley class E-book which is extremely thorough, but it only includes 2 pictures of the up-gunned refit and mentions purchasing another set of plans for this configuration, of which they have 2 different ones. I found the general plans PDF of DE-701 which mostly just has interior layout and not the kind of detail I need for a model conversion.
My 2 questions are: Does anybody know of anybody that completed the England kit in this conversion so that I could look at model photographs for reference? And, does anybody have the TFD plans for the USS Coolbaugh 5"/38cal; TFW-DE217/8 or NAV-DE217 that they would be willing to share?
Thank you!

Yes, it has one profile shot but is lacking many of the centerline and forward AA tubs. Every other page in the file is compartment schematics which doesn't help.DavidP wrote:the booklet of general plans for DE-701 USS Osmus has both topview & profile but is of 1958.

Re: Calling all USS Buckley/Captain class (DE/APD) fans
This question has popped up before ... viewtopic.php?f=49&t=8212&start=120#p330603 ... I posted a couple of images.
I made a 1/700 scale model of one of these by taking a Pitroad Skywave a 5-gun kit and bashing with a BUCKLEY kit to get the bridge and other details.
Here are some additional images of scans from NARA;
The closest unit is DE-678 HARMON

All great photographs that will definitely help. Is anybody familiar with those The Floating Drydock drawings of Coolbaugh with the 5" guns? I'm wondering if they would help at all?

Re: Calling all USS Buckley/Captain class (DE/APD) fans
Hello guys!
This is my very first message.
I am going to build the Revell's 1/249 scale HMS Bligh and I have a doubt regarding the correct colors to use.
Based on Revell's instructions, the hull color would be a light gray and the camouflage would be a kind of "green gray".
Does anybody have any information whether Revell is right or not?
What would be the correct colors to be used?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Alex.

Welcome to the forum!
You will probably have better luck with your inquiry on the colors for the camo scheme for the Bligh by posting your question in the Camouflage & Coatings area of the forum. There are a lot of Royal Navy experts on the forum that probably don't look at the Calling All Destroyers section too often.
Good luck!

Raven suggests Light Gray (5-O or 5-H & Sea Blue (5-S) on delivery. To be repainted by the British after acceptance by them.
