Ok, let's see how far we can get. What I want to try is to collect all information available on plastic kits of ancient warships out there. Not that there are many of them.

First off, a list of kits with short notes; longer reviews further below:

Academy

Greek Warship - 1/72 (also sold as 1/200) - well-engineered kit, good hull, very poor oarage, old Imai?
Roman Warship - 1/72 (also sold as 1/200) - well-engineered kit, good hull, very poor oarage, old Imai?

Aurora

Bireme - ?Scale? - no info

Heller

Bireme Imperator - 1/72 - excellent kit with good detail apparently well researched; hull considerably too short, though
Bireme Imperator - 1/225 - no info

Pyro

Roman Merchant Ship - no scale given, perhaps about 1/200 - smallish Pyro kit with some toylike features; still fairly good representation of a Roman corbita

Zvezda

Greek Trireme - 1/72 - well-engineered kit, but very inaccurate; probably rather 1/100
Roman Trireme - 1/72 - basically the same as the Greek Trireme
Roman Imperial Trireme - 1/72 - basically the same as the Greek Trireme
Carthaginian Warship - 1/72 - basically the same as the Greek Trireme

If you have any info on any of these kits or know of other kits of ancient warships, post it below, I'll then add it to the list.

I'd like to add my favorite old ship model kit, the Imai kit #B-295 Catalan ship model. This kit has long been out of production. It is a model of the 15th Century votive model that was hanging in a church in Spain.

Apologies for bringing this thread back to life, let me know if I should go elsewhere, please. I am in the middle of creating a Greek Trireme using two Zvezda kits. As noted by previous posters the kit isn't accurate for what it is purported to be, so I did some research and extrapolation using Conway's The Age of the Galley, Welsh's Building the Trireme, Morrison's and Wilsons' Greek and Roman Oared Warships 399-30 B.C. and some information from the Trireme Trust website.

I came to 2 conclusions: 1) As kitted the Zvezda Greek Trireme would be well on its way to being a Trihemiola, and would only need a bit of work; 2) With some (a lot of) work, one could create the basis of a "proper" Trireme from the Zvezda Greek Trireme by using two hulls.

What I've done is create a 1/72 scale plan using the Coates outlines from the Trireme Trust website and various books, and then cut up two Zvezda hulls to give me the basic hull. I've attached some pictures ... let me know if anyone is interested and I'll add some more.

Thanks for that link, hadn't seen those before. I'm still in a quandary whether to crew it or have it empty. I've already got six boxes of these ...http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/review.aspx?id=288, although the Shapeways ones might be better (easier material to clean up), although I'd need to remove their ankle fetters, however I'd need 170 of them which would get expensive ...!

The hull has gone together well (superglued butt joints), but because of the way I cut the hull sections, the joins aren't all in the same place. I'll get some more pictures today.

Edit: The BUM (Barcelona Universal Models) version I had believed to be an Aurora copy but box art could depict an IMAI mold. I am hoping to see the parts someday and will update this post accordingly.

Note also that IMAI made a Greek Warship in 1/72 and 1/250ish which was also sold by ERTL, Academy, and Aoshima.

Looks like we can add a few Plastic Viking warships to the list if we can call then Ancient. I listed these in order of scale. The primary manufacturer name is followed by the names of other manufactures who re-released/Re-boxed or copied the kit.

Viking Ghost Ship 1/40? Revell. ( I only saw the box) Likely the same as the Revell Viking Ship.

I've done eBay links on various forums as "Proof of Life" for pictures of kits or parts. I had not listed links with the intent of advertising.

Rome Trireme

but especially the first two look not very Roman, more Hollywood-like.

Which Greek ships are announced?
