There are two types visible in photos, single-horn and double-horn. They were very small.

I'm sure there is a difference between 1932 and 1941. And maybe there were differences compared to 1928.

The Lexington wreck photo below shows double-horn tie-downs along the side of the flight deck forward of the island, starboard side. Note the open elevator below compass headings 20 (actually 120) and 150.

I'm not saying that there were no double-horn ones in 1942

I'm talking about something else. In those photos that I have, I can see that at least until 1932 on the Lex in the middle of the deck there were only one-horned ones. Double-horn ones appeared later. And I have a question. Double-horn existed before 1932 or not? And were they placed in this way somewhere else in 1942. Or only in the area of ??the port bow 5-inch battery. And were there differences with Sara?

I'll show you what I was able to understand from the photo. This is Saratoga. But Lex had the same changes:
1 - original single-horn. Eight lines along the entire length and the ninth opposite the superstructure.
2 - double-horn added after 1932
3 - double-horn replaced original single-horn after 1932
4 - one windscreen board removed in 1929. Another one from the starboard side
5 - they were removed because this trolley was continued to the bow. As I think trolleys were covered with boards apr. in 1931 together with the catapult.

Just a quick question, did USS Lexington have 20mm's with shields when lost? Did she even have 20's yet?

She had 22 installed when her 8-inch guns were removed. Most were in galleries in the boat pockets.

I know that picture isn't the best quality, but they're large and should be visible in either vertical or horizontal position from that angle.

They're there - the dark line you can see just above the boat pockets are the nets.

Ah, my mistake. I thought it unlikely they would be at just the perfect angle to the camera while also not casting shadows on the hull, but seems I was hasty in my observation.

If I was to update an early Lexington to a May '42 version what were the main 8" turrets replaced with and in what sort of configuration? Were there any other glaring changes between the two?
