Calling all Yamato (大和) and Musashi (武蔵) fans

You will probably want to use Kure Naval Grey, its the color of the Yamato, even though Musashi was built at a different port.

Anyway, another update today.
In order to get experience with the saw before I start the Super Yamato project, I will scratchbuild and RC one of the Yamato's many little boats, a 11 m (real size, not the size of the scratch) 60 hp motor boat. It is similar to a PT boat, without weapons though.
Due to the small amount of gun plans online, I had to design my own AA battery, and I still am. The triple 6.1" guns at the top, after thinking, will be replaced with triple 7.1"s.
On the next picture, the 7.1"s have been put into place, and the rest of the ship is bare. (Alongside the Yamato of course..) (Slow internet connections beware of the next pic..)

Boroboy2,

First, you will have to determine the timeframe in which you want to model Musashi. To find the correct IJN gray for Musashi at a particular time in her career, you will have to figure out which shipyard performed her last refit.

Your should check the TROMs at

Go to the battleship section and click on Mushashi to find what you need. I looked quickly and she was likely in Kure gray, Yokosuka gray, and captured British gray at various times in during her career.

If you want a definitive answer, you can buy WEM IJN color guide which lists the proper color and timeframe for all major IJN ships. I'd tell you the answer from my copy, but I don't have access to it right now.

Heh, if you guys let me bend the rules, then these are the colors, if you dont, color set 2 is the set then...

Color Set 1:
Kure Naval Grey (Not sure, may be too dark)
Type 2 Naval Camoflage (For CVs, but this is dark enough)
Deck Tan

Color Set 2:
Kure Naval Grey
Type 21 Naval Camoflage (too bright for my tastes..)
Deck Tan

I may have to use a non Japanese Naval Grey for the grey areas, the Jap colors are too blue and dark...heh..

Hmm the AA batteries might have some hard time in turning...suggest either square or circulize the casing, or make a larger indent in the superstructure.

Lets see, about 4-5 feet long would put the scale at 1/200-250th.
Im not doing it larger because, well really it would be too huge then...

RC, I will absolutely try to do in this one, would be my first time due to the Musashi unfortunatly not going well..

But remember, if you check my sig, there is still the practice before I do the SY, the tiny little boat which should come out like 1-2 feet long, probably putting it at like 1/50-100th. It will be the test bed for the SY, to get experience with the saw and with RCing a ship.

Until the time comes again..

Hi all, just wanting to come in, and inform you of the status..(that is only if you care enough for it..)

The saw I will have by late May, plywood and balsa wood may come at the same time or a couple days/weeks later.

The ship is the same design, and the small boat is still TBD. So far my family has been getting on to me for not continuing the design process, by drawing my hull lines and etc.. I will do that soon, and the SY Project will be ready.

Anyone build an early war Yamato with the 6" beam turrets and without all of the AA?

Anyone build or own a Lifelike/Otaki 1/350 Yamato? Comments?

I purchased 1 Life-Like, (not yet received), and wonder what to expect.

Has anyone done a formal review of the LR PE/barrel set? I've been going through my Yamato references and it seems kind of odd, they got the hex-shaped AA emplacements on the front turret that conform to the ones on the 1/10th "Yamato at time of sinking" model in Japan but then other details like the round AA tubs on the deck are in odd positions. I just don't have the Yamato knowledge to really tear the set apart. However, I have to have one to display with my Montana, that's just the way it is.

As i have just received my Takara 1/700 sectional Yamato yesterday i was wondering if the deck colour on the Yamato was changed during the last stages of the war to dark blue, or even if it was painted it at all.The Takara model is beautifull and it will enable me to built a full hull Yamato in 1/700 scale but the deck colour is something of a dark blue as it represents the late war fit with the additional AA fitted.Does anyone know if that corresponds to reality? or is it just something Takara choose to go with.I know from the anatomy of the ship series on the Yamato and indeed from all my other sources that it was a general practice of the IJN to leave the decks unpainted in their original teak colour, at least on the main Battleships of their fleet.

It has been said that the decks were darkened with something prior to the last battle. Well, something like that.

Yea, I think they either took coal or something to it...let me check..

Okay, the thing doesnt say much about it..at all..

But I think they strengthened the grey tint in the wooden deck to make it darker..

I just dont know what with that they did that..

I also just recieved a 1/700 Tamiya Yamato. Wondering how to paint the decks properly. quite a debate on waht color they should be on all the orums i visit.
