Like Liaoning, the Type 001A is a conventionally powered short take-off but arrested recovery (STOBAR) carrier and is thus fitted with a 'ski-jump'.
According to Chinese state media, however, the new vessel is expected to be faster (top speed of 31 kt) than Liaoning (29 kt) and has a shorter island and a larger hangar. According to the state-owned Global Times newspaper, the Type 001A is expected to embark between 32 and 36 J-15 carrier-based fighters compared to the 24 J-15s Liaoning can carry.

Can someone confirm if the cargo ship behind Liaoning inside Hong Kong harbor is the Colombo Express? Using this photo as reference, I think it is possible to make a very interesting 1/700 Diaorama as both ships are available in the same scale!
It's not the Colombo Express herself, as she's currently in the Mediterranean making her way to the Suez Canal.
Found this photo by Getty - it seems she's the Berlin Express. Hapag Lloyd's vessel tracker indicates she left the nearby port of Shenzhen at 6am on July 7, so that works well with Liaoning's arrival.
Berlin Express is rather smaller than the Colombo Express, at 230m overall versus 335m. Berlin carries 7506 TEUs while Colombo is at 8749.
For those who want to build a model of the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong (Type 001A project), which is China's first domestically-built carrier, the Shapeways vendor Dutch Fleet Naval Miniatures now has a 1/700 Type 001A island available.
Presumably, one could just add this island to a Trumpeter 1/700 kit of her half-sister ship Liaoning, considering how similar the two vessels are.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chinese fighter pilots have carried out night landings on the countrys first aircraft carrier, the official China Daily reported on Saturday, the latest demonstration of military muscle as Beijings pushes to modernize its armed forces.
Pilots flying J-15 jets landed at night on the Liaoning, the official paper said, citing a video posted by Chinas navy. It said this was a complex maneuver that marked a huge leap towards gaining full combat capability.
China has ambitious plans to overhaul its armed forces as it ramps up its presence in the disputed South China Sea and around self-ruled Taiwan, an island China considers its own.

Trumpeter's Type 001A/Type 002 has now been released. Unfortunately, like that aftermarket island, it also has the wrong number and type of windows for the bridge, using the same part from the Liaoning kit: https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10585493
China Sends Aircraft Carrier Strike Group Near Okinawa in Message to US and Japan
5 Apr 2021
The Japan Times | By Jesse Johnson
China sent an aircraft carrier and five escort ships, including a destroyer likened to the U.S. Navy's Aegis-class vessels, through the Miyako Strait near Okinawa over the weekend in a signal of its growing ability to counter American and Japanese military power further from its shores.
Japan's Defense Ministry announced late Sunday that the Liaoning carrier and five other warships were spotted Saturday sailing south through international waters in the narrow passageway that separates Okinawa's main island and Miyako Island. The vessels did not enter Japanese waters or its contiguous zone.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Eight Chinese naval vessels, including an aircraft carrier, passed between islands in Japan's southern Okinawa chain on Monday, Japan's defence ministry said in a news release.
The ships, which included several destroyers, sailed between the main Okinawa island and Miyakojima, according to the ministry. Although there was no incursion into Japan's territorial waters, helicopters on board the Liaoning carrier took off and landed, the ministry said.
China's Defence Ministry did not answer calls seeking comment during a national holiday.
The U.S. 7th Fleet, part of the Navy's Pacific force, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Taiwan's Defence Ministry said it would monitor the movements of the carrier group, and described the situation as "normal."
