Stuck at sea diorama paint

Post by Dkarlsen92 »

Hi :)

I'm trying to make a sea diorama for my 1/350 fletcher
I got the wooden frame already and foam but i'm not sure about the paintjob.
I got tamiya acrylics flat blue and light sea grey, flat white, sea blue (sea blue is very dark ) available. Does anyone have any experience with mixing some of those paints to get an alright sea surface ?
I am planning to use PVA mixed with water on paper to create sea waves at the bow and PVA to glue kitchen alu foil on the foam
And are you painting straight on the alu foil or do you use some sort of putty or paper first and then paint?

Have you checked out some of the water-making guides in the Compendium post stickied at the top of the forum?

As a tip, avoid using aluminium foil - the folds are too sharp to look right.

I'm building a sea diorama too for my 1/700 Yamato ..(there's an image, it's my first attempt at the diorama sea). I'm at a stage of applying layers of gesso to the sea-scape. Like the previous post, do not use foil. Build the waves from a styrofoam board with a brush drill to create eye-shaped gouges.

I will be using acrylic paints, such as dark tones of blue (ie. phthalo blue), black and white for the sea, with highlights of light blue and green around the aftermath of waves disturbed by the ship.
