Calling all Elizabethan-era ship fans

Post by patmaquette »

Hi all, I wonder if you can help me with the following. I would like to find a model of the Ark Rayleigh to put in our local museum (Sir Walter Rayleigh was born and spent his early childhood hereabouts in Devon). The Ark Rayleigh was commissioned by him, but was given to the crown to become the very first Ark Royal and fought against the armada under the command of Howard of Effingham.
There is some uncertainty regarding how the ship appeared, particularly whether she had "lanterna" type turrets on each side (such as seen on the Heller model of the Stella). Otherwise, maybe she looked similar to the Revenge (in which case the Airfix series 5 kit might be a reasonable representation).
I have found one or two photos of Ark Royal models on the net, but can't trace the owners to ask whether they would be prepared to part with them.
I would be most interested to hear any thoughts on this subject, to know whether you have a built or unbuilt kit of the Ark Royal or Revenge that I could purchase from you or if you know of someone I could contact to commission a build.
    Many thanks for looking!

    Hello Pat:

By now you probably have your requests filled. If not, I am in the process of researching ARK ROYAL and have built the REVENGE from scratch in the miniature scale of 1:200.

If interested feel free to email me. I have enclosed a few images of REVENGE as she appeared in 1588.

    Regards,

    Rex

Thank you for thinking about me, Rex. Yes, I have provided something for the museum now. The model was completed only a couple of weeks back, but it will be some time before the museum will re-open to the public owing to the covid bug.
I love what you did for your Revenge model - that really is delicate work !
I will be very interested to see your version of Ark Royal - will you post some photos of it?

    Thanks once again,
    Pat

    Hello Pat:

For some reason I uploaded additional images and didn't see your correspondence. I agree that this pandemic is affecting so many -globally. However, here in the States we have a strong and vilgilant Governor who has addressed this 'head-on' and brought our numbers down significantly. Even with the current hurricane that hit us yesterday, he was 'front and center' with emergency standby crews. People want him to run for the Presidency but he's loyal to our State.

As for the ARK ROYAL, that will be a project I will endeavor this fall/winter...if everything balances. And yes, I will post here upon completion.

I hope you and those across the pond will stay vigilant in your fight with this crisis. Stay well!

Likewise, and thank you Rex. Stay safe in the hurricane,

Zvezda makes a plastic Revenge in 1/350. With some TLC and a LOT of rigging it can make an attractive little model.

Thank you for making me aware of that.
I also think the Airfix lkit, at around 1/130 scale, also makes up nicely. I used it as a basis for my Ark Royal. https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/ind ... hed-model/
