EMDEN had three stacks. They would rig a fourth funnel as deception.

SMS Emden in 1/350

Post by Talisker »

A friend of mine from switzerland has built a very nice SMS Emden in 1/350 (Revell, GMM). There's also a detailed buildup log (german text but many pictures).

I picked up the SMS Emden from Revell in 1/350 and the Gold Medal photo etch the other day. I also got some GMM figures. Stay tuned for a build! :wave_1:

I plan to build her as she was during her last fight after which she was scuttled. It is going to be a full hull model using the stand that comes in the kit. I am not yet so advanced a builder that I can work with wood.

i am starting her also. have a friend in my wooden ship model club who has the 1/200 scale plans and the gunther-huff book. http://www.rkymtnshipwrights.org. also got the GMM set and the vector cut laser wooden deck for the center scetion (fore and aft decks were not wood). i too am going to paint her in war colors.

have you found any 1/350 open mount guns? any size from 3" to 6" would probably work. just have to build the gun shields. i plan on cutting the back out of the deck guns and building the breeches so they don't look like turrets if i can't find any guns.

i have markgraf in the queue along side varyag. would like to see a goeben and a ww1 scharnhorst plus a british idiot (invincible) class battlecruiser in 1/350.

Progress report

Post by masch3 »

***edit: added pictures***

Well, here is what I have done so far:

The kit is finished in her "colonial" colours, so technically speaking, the kit does not fit in this thread anymore. :no_2:

Paints used were WEM Buff and US Norfolk Anti Fouling Red, and Tamiya flat white with a whisper of grey.

The hull is 90% finished, basically only the railings are left to be attached together with the pilot house.

Fore mast also 90 % finished, only the search lights are left to add.

Rear mast is 50 % finished; when I painted the fore mast yellow, the airbrush inexplicably clogged and I had a panic-stricken moment as I tried to salvage my airbrush. This kind of put me off, and I haven't had any progress since then.

The gun shields were opened in the back with basic breech detail added. They were painted buff, not white as many others have done; pictures show that at least at one point the guns were buff.

References were Koopps book "Leichte Kreuzer", the official war records of the German Navy after the war, "Der Krieg zur See - Kreuzerkrieg" 1 and 2, as well as many of the pictures floating around on the internet.

Well, I have made some (small) progress on my Emden.

I finished the pilot house except for the railing on the roof, added flag pole on the bow (yet to be painted) and painted the rear mast buff. I also added bow railing and forcastle railing. The canvas cover on the bridge wings were painted using MisterKit Clear Doped Linen paint for WWI plane models.

I feel that it is nothing spectacular yet. I am used to detail and a "clean" look from my time with planes and tanks, but I am slowly starting to realize that the comparatively small scale of the ships bring different challenges.

I have some etched parts for the Borodino and the Mikasa that I am starting to think that I should add to this model, especially eye bolts to facilitate rigging.

Looking closely, one can see that there are eye bolts molded to the funnels, and I am thinking of replacing these.

i haven't done much ship building (other than 1/35 LCM w/ M3 Stuart tank loaded) but i am awaiting the WEM 1/350 5"/51 guns for arizona which i am hoping i can use on emden.

Weill, I used a Proxxon to drill out the backs of the gun shields and scraped the edges with my xacto in order to get a thin edge that was more to scale. I then added a breech made from plastic rod from evergreen. A bit too simplistic, I know (especially after having seen the guns on the Zvesda Variag), but I think it works quite fine.

Small hand wheels from l'arsenal would, of course, have added a lot of "feel".

I added the Emden to my stash as well. More than likely I will get the wooden deck and then the GMM set and do her up really nice.

Those old ships just have more class than the new ones do.

Hey

There's no 1/700 Emden in plastic. However, HP models make one in resin.

When the Emden received her grey war scheme, was the linoleum decking left its normal color or painted over? I have read it was very damaged from coaling operations at sea and was patched with canvas and tar.
