Calling all Samuel Gompers-class (AD) destroyer tender fans

Post by joedunlap »

I havent seen a post for any AD fans, so I thought I would start one. I was a crewmember on the Gompers, AD-37 from 68 to 71 and miss the old girl since she was SINKEX'ed 4 years ago. I know there are no model kits available for her class and just wondering out loud if anyone knows of any attempts (or completions) of a scratchbuild of this class, or perhaps any kits on the drawing board? I think she would make an interesting build, given her myriad of traveling cranes, heavy lift cranes, boats, flight deck and such. Even her lonely 5" 38 gun that was removed in her later years.
(Only fired once during trials. The violence of the recoil shook the false overhead loose in the captains quarters )

Anyway, just though I would throw this one out to see what sort of response/interest there might be.

Hello,

I am Michael Clare and new to the board.

Is this thread only limited to Gompers Class AD's or other earlier classes too? I am building two USS Arcadia's of the "Klondike" Class (AD-22). One completely from scratch in 1/192 scale, and one in 1/380 which will be more of a scratchbuild then a kitbash. For the 380 scale I am using the hull from the Revell 1/380 scale "Hawaiian Pilot" kit. It is a C-3 type hull also, but it needs to be lengthened and widened to meet the scale of the Arcadia. I am only using the hull from the kit and maybe the 26' MTB's and a couple of other items. But all of the superstructure and decks are scratchbuilt.

I started with plans from "Floating Drydock" and I have both projects well under way.

What are the rules for build and pics?
Good Modeling!

Hi Michael,

I dont know about the board, but since this is my thread, I certainly have no problem with you posting here. However, you might have better luck getting input if you start your own thread. I started this one as a shot in the dark, hoping I might get a reply or 3 but its been over 2 years now and yours has been the first. Good luck with your build. Id love to see some pictures if you have them. I was a Gompers crewman in the 60s and I remember seeing the Klondike on a couple of occasions when I was in the P.I.
