Some of the Essexes entered the war already with the SCB-27A or if commissioned later like the USS Oriskany as built.
Did the -27A include the switching from 40mm quads to the 3" twins and relative fire control?
Would like to have @modelmonkey jump in with some of his amazing detail/conversion parts in 1/350.

Yes, 3''/50s replaced Bofors on all SCB-27s, but not on a 1 to 1 basis. Gun tubs at the bow were often left empty (I think the twin 3'' mount is heavier than the quad Bofors, thus why it didn't replace it 1 for 1, but don't quote me on that).
We can have all of the resources in the world and still get it wrong. Not out of any incompetence, it's just because of how difficult it is sometimes to implement a physical feature without having seen it with your own two eyes. - the Chieftain

Indeed it was.
