Calling All Scottish Ferry Fans - David macBryanes LOCHEARN

Post by Shipbuilder »

Here is my latest miniature, Macbryanes ferry LOCHEARN of 1930. The model is built to a scale of 25 feet to one inch and the hull has an overall length of 6 1/2 inches. Completely scratchbuilt, from materails left over from larger miniatures

Prior to this, I used plasticine for seas, but this one is made from polysyrene foam. It was very easy to form the swell, I used a gas blowtorch with the air-intake turned off. This reduced the output to the level of a candle-flame. I then glued a sheet of crepe paper on top of it with white wood glue to give it a good painting surface. The paint was Humbrol model enamels. Very clean and successful - no more plasticine seas from now on! I was pointed in this direction via the "sea" section in "hints & tips!"

Looks very nice Bob. Is this the steamer that was featured in Model Shipwright some years ago?

Thanks,
No, this one was only completed a few days ago. I think the one you mean in Model Shipwright was probably the Arran Mail.

In the next SHIPWRIGHT 2012 that will be out at the end of this month, I have articles on the five-masted full-rigged ship Preuessen and the Cunard liner Carmania (1905).

I am not especially a fan of Scottish ferries, I built all types of Merchant ship.
