If I recall, a Udaloy hangar actually has something that opens the roof to clear those rotor blades - or alternately, it's the perspective of distance that is distorting the height between the rotors and the roof - It's hard to say really.

I can't help but think I was looking at a Slava for the slant in the door...

Yes, the rear half of the Udaloy hangar roofs do slide towards the bow:

Not sure whether this would be forward enough to clear the rotor top. Also uncertain (for me, anyway) is whether there was a static bar above the doors that would prevent a strictly horizontal entry for the helicopter.

Being an Udaloy "expert". No Timmy there is no such thing as a static part in that hangar. They can actually open the doors seperately and keep the roof closed, or open the roof and keep the doors closed. The chopper is placed via some rails on the elevator and then lashed to it. In that position, flight deck level, the aft stabilisers of the chopper are still outside the hangar. Then the elevator drives down forward along these rails on both sides and the helo slides in with the tail etc. The door you can see on the right of this helo down is the main deck door transverse next to the RBU launchers.
Here are some more pics, although I'd better put them in the Udaloy topic. They are also of Chabanenko, notice she doesn't have the rail system to move the helo from and to the hangar.

Also see the picture of the helo deck of Admiral Tributs which I posted in my R/C/Scratchbuild 1/100 Udaloy topic. There you can see the guy looking from the FlyCo top window towards the portside hangar, the roof hatches are open (he seems to check it visually) while the doors are still closed.

Very interesting, very interesting. A couple of interesting observations to add to this:

If you notice, there's actually THREE parts to the hangar roof of the Udaloy - look at the shot from above that Timmy posted, where the roof is retracted - notice, there's two sets of rails, one only going back half way - the step you see in the hangar shot where the roof is closed, is actually the step-gap between the two layers of the roof - it telescopes all the way forward in two stages, which is interesting enough.

Probably the reason was that they didn't want to put those Podkat guidance radars at the same height, along with a lower profile by lowering the hangar and of course stealth with the sloped sides all around (with a full height hangar, the doors would be VERY long/big) Possibly also stability, ship's motions are less felt inside/down than they are high on top, bringing the chopper up gives you a little more stability and makes the chopper move less during rolling.

So two of my Russian friends found this in a shop in Vladivostok and decided to buy it for me:






I was worried and confused at first; the only 1/700 Kirov are the Trumpeter/Pit-Road and Dragon kits, and as far as I have encountered, no one makes counterfeits of the Trumpy and Dragon Kirovs, begging the question of "what the hell is this? is this even a kit of the Kirov class?" The box was quite big - in fact, I was first expecting it to be one of the Kangnam/Arii/CC-Lee 1/600 Iowa class kits when I first saw the box.

So I took the plunge and opened it, readying my heart for disappointment and shock:


Looking closely at the deck part (the first one on top when I first opened it), I recognized instantly, much to my relief, the signature Trumpeter/Pit-Road features.

So it turns out Modelist sells Trumpeter kits in Russia - by license or not, I don't know! Cool story, anyway

Has anyone seen anything indicating that some of the Slava class, maybe Varyag, have been fitted with the Kashtan air defence system?
